Re-discovering Your Comfort Zone: Why it’s as important to Get Out of it as it is to Get In

You’ve heard it a million times—“Growth happens outside your Comfort Zone.” The idea is everywhere, pushing us to stretch, challenge ourselves, and take risks. But what if I told you that your comfort zone isn’t the enemy? That, in fact, having a solid and safe space to retreat to is just as essential as stepping out of it?

When I started working in Finance in the Big-Corp world, I took an image like this from a colleague and hung it in front of my desk so I could see it every day::

Have you ever seen this image or a similar one? I'm sure you've seen or heard that many times and it has pushed you to amazing growth, success, or learning. But have you ever considered the stress that comes with constantly pushing your limits? I bet there's been some of that too... But the worst thing happens when you don't allow yourself to rest, or feel bad about it and have a negative self-talk, each time that life is quieter and stable. Have you ever felt guilty for taking a break, even when you knew you needed it? That nagging feeling that you should always be pushing forward instead of pausing to recharge? The Comfort-zone guilt? If that's the situation, let me guide you through the explanations that will allow you to grow and rest without guilt or excess of stress.

Let me start with the Misconception about Comfort Zones: we’re conditioned to believe that staying within our comfort zone equals stagnation and it's "negative". The reality? Constantly living outside of it can lead to burnout, stress, and exhaustion. Because the effects of stress and burnout on your body and mind are something that will jeopardize your life-quality and health—I am not talking here about the inherent healthy stress/excitement of a new challenge, but sustained stress levels and high cortisol on a constant basis. Remember, that true growth isn’t about always being uncomfortable—it’s about knowing when to push forward and when to rest.

Now the question is, why do you need a Safe Space? Your comfort zone is like home base in a game of tag. It’s the place where you regroup, recover, and gather the energy to go back out and play. If you’re always running, never stopping to catch your breath, how long before you burn out completely? Not long... and when life gets more and more complicated—more responsibilities, maybe marriage, kids, etc.—reaching the burnout point becomes easier. Having a firm and sturdy comfort zone will be more necessary than ever.

The key is balancing Growth and Recovery. Instead of seeing your comfort zone as something to escape, start viewing it as a tool. Push yourself when a challenge lights you up, but also create routines, habits, and spaces that offer you stability. Growth is a cycle, not a one-way street—adventure and retreat should work hand in hand, the same way that darkness is the one that let us appreciate light. New challenges are most exciting when you can tackle them with full energy and confidence, allowing you to give your best and gain the most from the experience.

So if we want to shift the narrative, we need to redefine what Comfort means. Comfort doesn’t have to mean Complacency. It can mean security, self-care, and mental peace. A strong comfort zone allows you to take bigger risks because you know you have a safe space to land. It’s about sustainability—knowing when to challenge yourself and when to nurture yourself. So my new image on the desk looks like this one:

This image represents the importance of Growing out of your Comfort Zone, but returning to it to reflect, recharge and get ready to step out again. White background with black circles and arrows representing your Comfort Zone and your path out of it.

If you leave this post with one thing, please let it be that instead of buying into the all-or-nothing mindset of either staying safe or always taking risks, embrace both. Build a comfort zone that strengthens you, and step out of it as often as every life stage and energy levels allow you; when you’re ready—not because you feel pressured to. Remember that growth isn’t just about discomfort; it’s about finding the right balance between pushing forward and recharging.

Actually, that design I adapted about the comfort zone, if we take a longer span of time would look a lot more like this:

This white background with a central black circle named comfort zone, has four different circles around that return to center with an arrow point, symbolizing stepping out of the comfort zone to grow, learn and transform

So, how do you relate to your comfort zone? Do you honor it as a place of rest, or do you feel the constant need to escape? Perhaps you stay within it but struggle with guilt, preventing yourself from truly recharging. Remember, there's always time for magic, growth, learning, and transformation—provided you allow yourself the space to reset, reflect, and recharge. Find the right balance for you (which will evolve throughout different stages of your life and will also differ from others'), and let the magic flow.
